I think you’re not surprised

One of my favorite holiday movies is Love Actually.  We just watched it this afternoon — makes me tear up with happy tears every time.  Especially the storyline between Jamie and Aurelia.  When he first arrives in the south of France, Jamie has a conversation that goes something like this:

woman: This year you bring a lady guest?
Jamie: Ah, no. There’s a change of situation. It’s just me.
woman: Oh, am I sad or not sad?
Jamie: Uh, I think you’re not surprised.

This has been a crazy week.  Some high points, like me running for the first time in something like six months!  Wheee!  And some low points, like having to cancel our trip to Paris.  There have been some battles lost, like the pizza last night.  And some battles won, like only having one glass of wine with said pizza last night.

I’m back up one pound this week.  Not great, but given all that’s been going on, not as bad as it could have been.  The dance with 170 continues.  Am I sad or am I not sad?  I think I am not surprised.

In other news, I’ve got a fair amount of tenderness in my left knee from my run yesterday.  I expected my right knee might give me trouble — I have an old sports injury from a cheerleading accident in high school.  (Wipe that smirk off your face!  It is TOO a sport!) But instead it’s my uninjured knee that’s talking to me.  What’s it saying?  I’m pretty sure it’s telling me that I run like a duck.

Seriously, after doing some reading last night, I’m pretty sure I’m landing on my heels, not the ball of my foot, which is just all kinds of bad news for my knees.  If the tenderness is gone by tomorrow, I’m going again.  But next time I’ll really be focusing on my running form, and my footfalls.  Might be a slow start for me, but no sense putting in the mileage running awkwardly and painfully, when a little attention to detail in the first few weeks could make the whole journey much more smooth and enjoyable.

  • Good for you for realizing a problem early. I'm with Brooke, do your best to correct it now. And don't sweat the pound. It'll come off soon! No mindless eating this week!
  • Tobey
Good job getting back out on the pavement. Hope the knee pain goes away soon so you can continue on with it!
  • start focusing on form right now - i didn't when i was just starting and now i'm paying for it. much harder to correct after you've done it that way for a while.
